Kashi Vishwanath Temple

India’s cultural centre, Varanasi, is renowned as the city of Lord Shiva. The temple’s tower, adorned with an 800-kilogram gold plating, is a heavenly sight. The current edifice, known as the Golden Temple because of the gold plating on its spires and domes, was established in the 18th century by Ahalya Bai of the Holkar dynasty. Finely carved decorations adorn the columns, beams, and walls. Numerous smaller lingams (stylized phallic symbols representing Shiva) cluster around the main object of worship—a smooth black stone lingam on a silver pedestal. Accessible only to Hindus, the temple compound includes several smaller shrines and the Jnana Vapi (Wisdom Well), whose water is often considered a liquid manifestation of enlightenment.
Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat
