BCLS Certification Online Guide – What is BCLS?

What is BCLS?

BLS (Basic Life Support) refers to protocols utilized by first responders and other medical professionals to assist victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can receive full medical care at a hospital. Both BLS and BCLS are used interchangeably, though BLS is the correct term. BLS stands for Basic Life Support, while BCLS stands for Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Difference Between BLS and CPR Certifications

BLS can cause some confusion for individuals seeking a CPR class. In emergency medicine, BLS typically denotes Basic Life Support, in contrast to Advanced Life Support. Basic Life Support refers to the level of care provided to patients in an emergency situation.

BCLS Certification

BCLS certification is primarily used and recognized in the US, though other countries have comparable training and certifications. Many hospitals require their nurses, doctors, and sometimes medical aides to hold BCLS certifications. Additionally, some outpatient care facilities and schools mandate BCLS certification for their medical personnel.

The primary goal of BCLS certification is to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide emergency life-saving care during heart-related crises or heart attacks. The training includes essential information and practical exercises designed to be easily recalled and applied in critical situations where swift intervention is crucial. Quick and efficient help can significantly affect the outcome, often determining whether an individual fully recovers, faces debilitation, or survives.

Certification Process

The process to obtain a BCLS certification generally involves attending classes, participating in hands-on demonstrations, and passing a written exam. BCLS certifications typically expire annually, necessitating that medical professionals and others with the certificate retake the test and sometimes the course to maintain their certification.

Getting certified usually involves a two-step process:

  1. Enrollment in a Class: Classes may be held over a single day or a weekend.
  2. Taking an Exam: The specifics may vary by region or state, but regulatory bodies ensure that the curriculum and exams cover the necessary topics.

BCLS Course Guidelines

BCLS training starts with assessing the victim’s condition. Courses emphasize stabilizing the victim’s airway, breathing, and circulation, performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and using AEDs (automated external defibrillators). Proper use of these techniques can prevent brain damage from a lack of oxygen and often buy time until more specialized medical care is available.

Training also covers minimizing harm and infection risks while providing care. Students learn to use barrier methods during CPR to avoid blood-to-blood contact, ensuring both the caregiver and victim’s safety.

Course Eligibility

BCLS courses are often offered to medical professionals and aides, though members of the public interested in such training can also sign up for certification. Not all courses are available to the general public, as some are exclusive to healthcare facility employees.

Those without a professional need for the certificate may incur higher training fees, depending on the course provider’s rules. Courses are available in traditional classroom settings and online. It’s crucial to ensure that the course provider is recognized by the appropriate governing bodies for the certification to be valid. Professionals commonly required to hold a BCLS certification include nurses, doctors, and caregivers such as babysitters, nannies, and companions for the elderly.
